West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to the celebrated poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on his birth anniversary, commemorating his enduring legacy as a voice of resistance against oppression and a promoter of communal harmony.

Describing Nazrul as a “stalwart in times of crisis,” Banerjee announced the naming of key institutions in the poet’s honor. A new greenfield airport in Andal and a university in Asansol will bear Nazrul’s name, underscoring the government’s commitment to preserving his cultural heritage.

In addition to these, the state’s cultural center ‘Nazrul Tirtha’ and the ‘West Bengal Kazi Nazrul Islam Academy’ continue to serve as prominent hubs celebrating his literary contributions and lasting impact on Bengali literature.

Born in 1899, Kazi Nazrul Islam is widely regarded as the national poet of Bangladesh. His prolific output includes nearly 4,000 songs collectively known as ‘Nazrulgeeti.’ Through his writings and music, Nazrul fervently advocated for unity between Hindu and Muslim communities, leaving a powerful legacy that resonates across South Asia today.
