Multi-award-winning poet Heidi Sander has received the Urban Poetry Book Award from the American Legacy Book Awards for her latest collection, Stratford Gems. The book is a lyrical tribute to Stratford, capturing the city’s vibrant urban life through poetry and photography.
Urban poetry, known for reflecting the essence of city living, finds a unique voice in Stratford Gems, where Sander explores the places, people, and stories that shape her hometown’s artistic identity.
“Home is where the heart finds its voice—a place where creativity is nurtured, friendships are forged, and dreams are realized,” Sander said. “Stratford Gems features some of my favourite local spots as well as poems dedicated to artist friends like Dayna Manning, Claire Scott, and Kris von Kleist.”
The collection touches on universal themes of connection, memory, and belonging. Sander hopes the blend of her poetry and accompanying photographs will offer readers a deeper experience and inspire reflection on what “home” truly means.
Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma praised the work, saying, “Heidi’s poetry captures the heartbeat of our city, transforming everyday moments into lasting art. I often gift Stratford Gems to visitors because it beautifully represents the spirit of our artistic community.”
Sander is an active figure in Stratford’s poetry scene, frequently leading workshops and community events. She has volunteered at the Wellspring Cancer Centre, contributing to an anthology highlighting voices affected by cancer. More recently, she has collaborated with The Starlight and poet Claire Chapple to host monthly Community Poetry open mic sessions, fostering an inclusive space for local poets.
Urban poetry serves as both a mirror and megaphone for communities, giving voice to often unheard stories. “In today’s fast-paced world, events like Community Poetry and Poetry Stratford Live offer vital spaces for artistic expression and connection,” Sander noted. “Sharing personal narratives allows audiences to walk in another’s shoes, even if just for a moment.”
