Evansville Art Center to Host Poetry Workshop on May 28

by Angela

The Evansville Art Center will host a free community poetry workshop titled Nest and Bloom: On the Cusp of Summer on Tuesday, May 28. Led by local poet and writer LeAnn Bjerken, the session will invite participants to explore the seasonal shift from spring to summer through poetry.

Designed for individuals aged 16 and older, the workshop will include guided writing prompts, group discussions, and close readings of selected poems, including a piece by Emily Dickinson and an original work by Bjerken. The program aims to foster reflection on the natural world and its moments of quiet transformation.

Bjerken, who holds an MFA in creative writing, focuses her work on themes of nature, connection, and the magic found in daily life. Her debut poetry collection, Ordinary Omens, was published in September 2024 and is currently available for purchase. In addition to writing, Bjerken leads workshops that encourage creativity and connection with the environment through poetic expression.

Participants do not need prior experience in poetry. Materials will be provided, though attendees are asked to bring writing paper and a pen or pencil. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged.

To register or for more information, contact LeAnn Bjerken directly at [email protected].

The workshop will be held at the Evansville Art Center, located at 111 Main Street. The venue is handicap accessible. While the event is free of charge, donations to the Art Center are welcome.

This event is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and in part through a general fund appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature.
