Two Edison Students Win Congressional Poetry Contest

Two students from Edison have been named winners in Congressman Frank Pallone Jr.’s 10th Annual Congressional Poetry Showcase, an event held in recognition of National Poetry Month.

Sujena Maheshwaran Subashini, a student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and Alexander Poon, from Edison Academy Magnet School, were both honored for their entries in the “Environment” category, according to a press release issued by the congressman’s office.

The poetry contest invited students from across New Jersey’s 6th Congressional District to submit original poems throughout the month of April. Entries were judged across three themes — Engagement, Environment, and Social Justice — with winners selected at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

“The Poetry Showcase is a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to express themselves in writing while exploring themes that I believe resonate with their community,” said Rep. Pallone in a statement. “This year, we received over 600 submissions, which is a testament to our students’ dedication to literature and language. I want to thank everyone who participated and commend them for their commitment to this literary art.”

The annual competition aims to promote creative expression among young people while encouraging thoughtful engagement with social and environmental issues.
